The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will meet in Bangkok as of Monday for nearly a week to foster cooperation within the bloc and to discuss regional and international issues of common interest.

Bangkok.- Senior officials from the so-called ASEAN dialogue partners, which will address issues related to trade, economic collaboration and security in the region and Asia in general, are also attending the meeting.

Until August 3, Bangkok will also host the foreign ministers' meeting of ASEAN plus China, South Korea and Japan, the East Asia Summit and the 26th Regional Forum of the Association.

Among the most relevant issues on the agenda is the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, with the expected assistance of a high-level delegation from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

ASEAN intends to encourage debates about the issue and the continuation of dialogues between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, as well as negotiations between him and his peers from other nations involved in the matter.

The agenda also includes very sensitive issues in Southeast Asia, such as the Rohingya crisis and the situation in the East Sea or South China Sea, where several nations claim sovereignty over some islands.

In parallel, the foreign ministers of the nations along the Mekong River will participate in several sessions of the mechanisms on the exploitation of this vital river.

The foreign ministers of Japan and South Korea, who give great financial support to that goal, will attend some of those meetings. (PL)
