Faced with the threat that looms over public education, the Federation of Teachers in Puerto Rico (FMPR) joins forces with other organizations against the alliance schools promoted by the government.

San Juan.- In this regard, the president of the FMPR, Mercedes Martínez, told Prensa Latina that the objective is to carry out a real educational reform through the repeal of Law 85-2018, put into effect during the administration of ousted governor Ricardo Rosselló Nevares.

On Sunday, hundreds of teachers, with the backing of union, political and social sectors marched through Old San Juan against the policy of privatization of public education in this country of 3.2 million inhabitants.

Originally called by the FMPR, along with Únete, Jornada Se Acabaron las Promesas and El Otro Puerto Rico, the march made a route from Plaza Colón to La Fortaleza, the seat of the executive branch, to ask Gov. Pedro R. Pierluisi for a five-year moratorium on the so-called alliance schools.

The spokesman for El Otro Puerto Rico, Alfonso Ortiz Menchaca, said that some foreign investors receive tax exemptions, which some are taking advantage of to turn public education into a business. (PL)
