Brazil's President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, confirmed this Thursday that he will run again for the presidency in the general elections scheduled for October 4, 2026.
During an official visit to Indonesia, the head of state announced his intention to campaign and addressed his physical condition despite being 80 years old. "I am 80 years old, but you can be sure I have the same energy I had when I was 30. And I will run for a fourth term in Brazil," he stated.
If his candidacy materializes, the leader of the Workers' Party (PT) would seek to extend his political tenure at the helm of the country, having previously returned to power in January 2023 after defeating Jair Bolsonaro in the 2022 elections.
Lula Aims for Fourth Term in Brazil
Brazilian legislation allows a president to serve two consecutive terms but does not prohibit running again after an interval. It is worth recalling that before his most recent victory, Lula had assured the public that the 2022 election would be the last of his career, citing age-related reasons and the need for "political renewal" in Brazil.
However, just months after taking office again, the president left open the possibility of another bid. In February 2023, he noted that his health and the country's political context would be key factors in his decision. (CubaSí)
