The Ministry of the Interior (MININT) reported on Wednesday that a speedboat entered Cuban territorial waters this morning and opened fire on a Border Guard Troops surface vessel.

Havana, Cuba.- The offending vessel, registered in Florida, USA, with registration number FL7726SH, approached within one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino channel, on Falcones Cay, Corralillo municipality, Villa Clara province, the Minint stated in a press release.

According to the report, as the Cuban Border Guard Troops’ surface unit, with five personnel, approached for identification, fire was opened on the Cuban officers from the offending vessel, resulting in injuries to the Cuban vessel’s commander.

As a result of the confrontation, at the time of this report, four foreign attackers were killed, and six were wounded. The wounded were evacuated and received medical attention.

Faced with current challenges, Cuba reaffirms its commitment to protecting its territorial waters, based on the principle that national defense is a fundamental pillar for the Cuban State in the protection of its sovereignty and stability in the region, the Ministry of the Interior emphasized.

It also indicated that the competent authorities are continuing their investigations to fully clarify the facts. (RHC)
