Transporting hemodialysis patients is a highly sensitive priority.

The lives of more than a hundred residents of Las Tunas depend on a crucial link: the transportation that takes them to receive hemodialysis treatment. Given the country's complex energy situation, local authorities have implemented a network of alternative routes to ensure that none is left without access to the system.

Las Tunas, Cuba.– Reynaldo Reyes Silva, the Transportation Delegate, told 26 that "In coordination with the Public Health sector, we are currently assisting 104 patients who require regular and mandatory transportation to their dialysis sessions. This figure represents all cases in the province that need this logistical support."

"Transporting hemodialysis patients is a highly sensitive priority. Today, we can confirm that there are no difficulties in their transport. Different options are being used, and fuel supplies have been prioritized to guarantee these services without interruption."

One of the most significant geographical challenges is in the provincial capital, where distances and the limited availability of traditional vehicles led to the implementation of a solution that, while not ideal, has become practical: the incorporation of electric tricycles into the assistance service.

"In the provincial capital, the distances to be covered and the need to meet medical appointment schedules led us to use this alternative to supplement patient transport. It's not the best option in terms of comfort, but it is effective, allowing us to complete the care cycle," stated Reyes Silva. This resource complements the existing fleet, including vehicles still operating through the Las Tunas Taxi Agency while logistics are being reorganized to optimize route days and times.

Authorities are focused on the immediate future. As part of the national government's commitment to protecting this vulnerable segment of the population, a substantial investment in electric transportation is planned.
"The arrival of 10 electric cars is expected, which will come with an additional power supply." “In addition, 10 more vehicles are planned specifically for the municipality of Puerto Padre,” he added.

For patients and their families, the certainty that transportation will be waiting is a relief amidst the rigorous treatment.
