The Government of Mexico today dispatched a contingent of 145 firefighters and specialists with expertise in fire management to support efforts against the large-scale wildfires registered in Chile.
According to a statement from the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), the team is composed of personnel from 24 states across the country, responding to the request for assistance made by the South American nation's administration.
Specialized Personnel and Coordination
The Commission stated that the personnel to be deployed possess the necessary training, experience, and technical standards to support firefighting and control operations in that nation, thereby contributing to the protection of human lives, property, and ecosystems.
It added that it maintains close coordination with Chile's National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) and with the authorities of both governments, enabling the definition of the logistical and operational aspects of the deployment within the framework of international cooperation mechanisms on the matter.
"This act of solidarity reaffirms the ties of collaboration and friendship between Mexico and Chile, while also strengthening regional efforts to address emergencies arising from wildfires," the institution noted.
Commitment to Fraternal Assistance
It reiterated Mexico's commitment "to international cooperation, the comprehensive management of fire, and a fraternal response to natural disasters, for the benefit of sister nations in Latin America."
According to the most recent report from Chilean authorities, the preliminary toll of the wildfires affecting the south-central part of the nation —specifically the Ñuble and Biobío regions— stands at at least 21 deaths, over 20,000 people affected, and approximately 800 homes destroyed. (CubaSí)
