In the vast prairie, the sun almost cracks the stones. The work is intense, and in recent days, the assembly of the Veguitas Photovoltaic Solar Park (PSFV, in Spanish) in the municipality of Manatí has progressed steadily, transforming the landscape of a rural area shared by the communities of La Veguita (Las Tunas) and Villaverde (Manatí).
Las Tunas, Cuba.– Engineer Maikel Brito Peña, director of the Construction and Assembly Company (Conalza Las Tunas), illustrates the progress with the pouring of the foundations that will support the first four inverters and other components required for the primary and secondary equipment.
Work continues unabated on leveling the land across the 32 hectares that will house the main generating unit and on pouring the foundations for three more inverters, as well as on the layout of internal roads and the perimeter fence. These are all part of a project that supports the declared decision to change the country's energy matrix by migrating towards renewable and clean sources.
Simultaneously, the pouring of more than 16,380 pillars began. These structures will support 1,638 tables on which 42,588 panels will be installed. "This demonstrates that we are marching with firm steps towards the nation's electrical sovereignty," exclaimed Brito Peña, director of the park's main construction force.
The young engineer speaks on behalf of the men and women of his team, who brave the harsh weather alongside workers from the Renewable Energy Sources Company (EMFRE), the Construction Materials Company (Vitalmac Las Tunas Prefabricated Buildings), and the National Institute of Applied Research (ENIA).
“We are all aware that the efforts are worthwhile and the sacrifices don't matter if their fruits contribute to the well-being of our people. There are never impossible tasks when unity prevails, and that spirit animates the collective effort,” Brito Peña emphasized.
Once completed, the Veguitas solar park will be the third in Las Tunas with an installed capacity of 21.8 MW, as part of the prioritized national program that confronts the fierce U.S. energy blockade against Cuba.
