
The provincial ceremony for the Cuban Press Day was held at the Vicente García Memorial. It was presided over by Osbel Lorenzo Rodríguez, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in the province; Governor Yelenys Tornet; Adalys Ray, President of the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC); and other authorities.
Las Tunas, Cuba.– Enlivened by beautiful performances from concert pianist Elvira Skourtis and young singer-songwriter Jesús Ricardo Pérez Sicilia, the event became a special occasion to recognize several colleagues for their admirable work.
Among those honored were the recipients of the “Ubiquel Arévalo Morales” provincial Journalism Prize: István Ojeda Bello (26 Newspaper), Yaidel Miguel Rodríguez Castro (Radio Cabaniguán), Yordanis Rodríguez Vega and Rosa María Ramírez Reyes (both from Radio Libertad), and Evelyn Charité Güides Rivera (Radio Victoria).
Rafael Aparicio Coello received well-deserved applause for the Rosano Zamora Paadín Lifetime Achievement Award, for more than two decades dedicated to the profession with responsibility and humility.
The winners of the Ricardo Varela Rojas Award for the Work of the Year also received their accolades: Yuset Puig Pupo (Print Media), Yamileydis Montoya Pupo (Radio), Gianny López Brito (Television), Yaidel Miguel Rodríguez Castro (Hypermedia), and Reynaldo López Peña (Graphic). The jury members for both awards were also honored.
Likewise, Aliuska Barrios Leyva was recognized on-site for her unwavering commitment and dedication to leading the Provincial Radio System for 20 years. Ania Caballero Leyva was welcomed to that position and was wished success in such a challenging task.
Similarly, the most outstanding members of the UPEC grassroots delegations received collective recognition: Zucel de la Peña Mora (26), Juan Morales Agüero (national media), Yamileydis Montoya Pupo (Radio Victoria), and Natasha Díaz Bardón (TunasVisión).
Osbel Lorenzo Rodríguez expressed his appreciation to the sector for its ethical and dedicated work, demonstrating a clear understanding of its role in society and its commitment to providing the population with immediate and reliable news every day.
Following the ceremony, the exhibition "Fidel and the Las Tunas Press" was inaugurated at the UPEC headquarters. Comprising 13 photographs of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution during his visits to Las Tunas, the exhibition serves as a beautiful tribute to the Commander-in-Chief in the year of his centennial.
Thus, amidst accolades and tributes, anecdotes and smiles, the Press Day in the province drew to a close. Its program included various initiatives, from commemorating deceased reporters to timely discussions on the challenges facing journalism today.
