With an extensive academic program, ophthalmology professionals in Las Tunas are celebrating World Glaucoma Week from March 8 to 14. This week has been established to raise awareness about this disease, which is the leading cause of irreversible bilateral blindness worldwide, in Cuba, and in Las Tunas.
Las Tunas, Cuba.– Dr. Noraidis Suárez Estéves, a Second-Degree Specialist in Ophthalmology and Doctor of Science, told 26 that during the event, numerous activities will be held, led by the Glaucoma Department of the Ophthalmology Center at the Dr. Ernesto Guevara General Teaching Hospital, with research as the central focus.
The doctor explained that conferences on the impact of this debilitating disease are being given during the week. They will also foster exchanges among academics to learn about the disease's progression in the region and the results of community screenings.
She added that, in this edition, the Provincial Council of Scientific Societies and the chapters of the Cuban Societies of Ophthalmology and Family Medicine are joining forces in the Visual Health Campaign -focused on preventing blindness from glaucoma-, which extends health promotion to the communities.
Risk perception, timely diagnosis, and practical strategies when living with this condition -for the whole family- are other topics on the agenda.
