The navigation room of the José Martí Provincial Library, which had not provided Internet services for three years, will offer this facility free of charge once the quarantine has been completed, announced Carmen Velázquez Quintana, director of that cultural institution.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- “Taking advantage of this time, we reprogrammed the budget to resolve the situation and updated all the data. From now on, there will be an improvement in the information service for users, since, for example, they will be able to download the books of their interest, " she added.

In addition, "thanks to the help of the Desoft Computer Applications Company, we achieved a direct connection with Cubarte (Portal of Cuban Culture), which will allow an increase in services in digital support," added the also president of the José Martí Cultural Society (SCJM) in the province.

From the end of March this year, the operation was suspended until further notice from libraries and other cultural institutions, as part of the measures aimed at preventing the spread of the new coronavirus. However, the Provincial Library outlined a series of actions that have allowed its 25 workers to stay active from home and contribute to the collective well-being.

“One of the activities that we carry out at home is the processing of books, which is that the purchased copies are assigned the corresponding subject, and then facilitate their organization on the shelves. In the specific case of the three computing specialists we have, they work directly on those changes that we will show after the reopening, ” she argued.

Founded on January 28, 1951, this institution also has a José Martí Room, an art room, a heritage room, one for people with disabilities and a newspaper archive. Several initiatives and competitions have been born from that venue, among them t La Muñeca Negra contest (The black doll), which they have defended for more than 30 years.
