Three Cuban projects nominated for the World Summit on the Information Society 2021

The “Gender Equality in ICTs on Wheels” Project of the Union of Informatics of Cuba (UIC) in the province of Las Tunas is among the three similar Cubans nominated for the World Summit on the Information Society 2021, which will take place virtually.

This was confirmed to the Cuban News Agency by its main coordinator, Dayalé Torres Diéguez, a specialist in the vice-presidency of Knowledge Management of the National UIC, who explained that the initiative seeks to contribute to the development of women and girls through self-learning and the study of professions related to information and communication technologies (ICTs).

The project, aimed at eliminating the digital gender gap in hard-to-reach communities, responds to research and lines of work that are projected by the UIC for the sake of local development, and that in the context of COVID-19 take on notable significance since the pandemic has exacerbated these differences and opportunities for access to development tools such as information technology, she stressed.

The editor of the Cuban Journal of Digital Transformation also added that receiving a nomination like this in the days leading up to March 8 is a confirmation of how necessary these initiatives are to empower women, accompany them in their growth, and provide them with technological resources and information to become protagonists of the development in their communities.

“Gender Equality in ICTs on Wheels” encompasses a stage of basic digital literacy that seeks to provide female populations with good practices in accessing and using social media, preparing them to recognize and face the main manifestations of gender violence they suffer, many times unconsciously, both in the online and offline worlds.

The nomination, known on Tuesday through the website of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), an organization of which Cuba is a member, also includes CMHS Radio Caibarién, of the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television, and the Construction of Genre in the commercial television advertising speech of Cubavisión Internacional, also supported by the Union of Informatics of Cuba (UIC).
