Producers of honey set a record

Beekeepers in the province of Las Tunas achieved a historical record in the production of honey for a quarter by collecting more than 181 tons, according to Waldo Torres Stoll, director of the Apicultural base business unit.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The manager explained to 26 that these results respond to the designed strategy to consolidate the collection of the exportable product, which they dedicate to the 8th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba and the anniversaries 59 and 60 of the Young Communists League and the José Martí Pioneers Organization.

Torres Stoll added that from January to March, they also exceeded the obtaining of wax, with 2,953 kilograms, and propolis, amounting to 333 kilograms. Both lines have a significant demand for their use in cosmetology and medicine, fundamentally.

Las Tunas shows progress in other aspects related to beekeeping; the gradual increase in the number of producers, which already add up to 147 in the eight municipalities is an example.

Also, productive hives are growing - counted at 10 thousand 712 - which also constitutes an excellent result and allows increasing stocks for the benefit of beekeepers and the country's economy since honey is widely accepted abroad.

On this occasion, the bees of Las Tunas consumed different honey species, among which the romerillo de costa stands out, with flowering in February, and the remains of the snowdrop, which had its full bloom last December.

This year, the province expects to produce 513 tons of honey, and various actions are carried out to guarantee that goal, including disease prevention, training for producers, and transhumance of swarming bees to the north and south coasts.
