14,444 people here had taken advantage of the distance working modality

The increase in distance work and requests for temporary suspension of self-employment are the two clearest symptoms of how employment in this province has had to adapt to the physical distance indicated by the authorities, in order to face the COVID-19 pandemic.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- After the first week in which the Cuban government took stricter measures to keep the population away from the infection with the new coronavirus, 14,444 people here had taken advantage of the distance working modality, according to the records of the Provincial Directorate of Labor and Social Security.

Companies such as the Cuban Telecommunication Company (Etecsa in Spanish) has already implemented it en masse in those positions that allow it, as confirmed its executives to 26Digital.

As that entity and the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS, in Spanish) have insisted, while the teleworking is taking place, the employee continues to receive his or her full salary, including a lunch stipend, in case of those who receive it.

The private sector of the local economy has also had to take steps against the drastic reduction of activity and at the beginning of this week, 670 requests for the temporary suspension of the exercise of self-employment had already been received throughout the territory.

In this regard, their representatives in the Balcony of Eastern Cuba and the MTSS explain that the text of the application must include name and surname, ID card number, municipality and province, and finally, the time of the suspension; they clarify that it is not required to deliver the self-employment card. In addition, they said, in the case of those who make the procedure in person, the document can be carried by anyone, not necessarily the holder, and along with this can be sent the ones of their hired employees, so that they are still suspended, regardless of whether or not they reside in the same municipality.

Likewise, they encourage those who need to process the temporary suspension to use alternatives that not include the physical presence, to avoid crowding.
