Haitian health authorities on Thursday reported 111 new suspected cases of cholera and 11 confirmed cases, more than double the toll compared to Wednesday´s report.

Port-au-Prince.- The report also stated that 51 in 111 suspected cases were aged under 19 and 27 of them were aged under five years.

The cholera outbreak remains affecting mainly Haiti's capital, especially in the communes of Cité Soleil and Port-au-Prince, with 41 and 55 suspected patients, respectively. However, at least two cases have been reported in Mirebalais.

On Thursday, the United Nations warned that the cholera outbreak can still be stopped if a humanitarian corridor is established for the fuel exit from the Varreux terminal to help hospitals and allow water purification resumption.

Since mid-September armed groups have been blocking access to the country’s main hydrocarbon depot, worsening Haiti´s present fuel shortage.

Lacking fuel has forced hospitals, health centers, and businesses to shut down, in addition to slowing down economic activities and postponing the restart of the school year.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Ariel Henry called for assistance from the international community and urged for talks and humanity to prevent Haiti from sinking into an unprecedented crisis. (PL)
