Major General Ramón Pardo Guerra, head of the National General Staff of the Civil Defense, participated in the daily meeting of the Provincial Defense Council, in which he called to increase surveillance and consolidate actions, both against the COVID-19 disease, as before the increase of the foci of Aedes aegypti.

In this sense, he said that it is necessary to maintain the perception of risk, because the novel SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is still present in the national territory and insisted on the mandatory use of the mask, the physical distance between people and social isolation.

As for the mosquito, he recalled, that at this time its populations are rising due to the arrival of the rainy season and called for intensifying the work of confrontation, especially in the zones with the highest incidence, which are the health areas Gustavo Aldereguía and Guillermo Tejas, in this city, and Romárico Oro, in Puerto Padre.

After a presentation by Dr. Viviana Gutiérrez Rodríguez, director of Public Health in the province, Pardo Guerra pointed out that the different groups and subgroups must avoid complications with the dangerous insect and the new coronavirus, to protect the 534,184 residents in the territory.

The visitor learned that although the traditional Meteoro Exercise was not carried out, the eight municipalities update the disaster risk prevention plans, given the possibility of natural phenomena such as severe local storms, intense rains and floods.

At the meeting, the main measures for the protection of the population, animals and the resources of the economy during the occurrence of these events were presented, with an emphasis on the availability of medical personnel and healthcare instruments and drugs, in addition to the assurance of hospitalized patients.

Pardo Guerra learned of the work currently being done on clearing ditches, rivers, streams, canals and gutters, tree trimming and sanitation of communities and economic entities; as well as the enlistment of premises where families in the most vulnerable areas can be sheltered.

He praised the province's preparation to face the hurricane season and recalled that the damage caused by these atmospheric phenomena can only be minimized with organization and vigilance.
