Ramiro Valdés assesses METUNAS tasks for recovery of Block 2 of the Felton Thermoelectric

The shape of the main metal structures to build the physical components of Unit 2 of the Lidio Ramón Pérez thermoelectric plant, located in Felton (Holguín), is currently one of the most demanding tasks in the Paco Cabrera metallurgical industry. Its specialists take great care in the realization of the plans to “give life” to these elements and technically get ready to face the final works before the end of the year.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Hence the systematic assessment toward the fulfillment of that objective by Commander of the Revolution and Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic, Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, who in another meeting with authorities from Las Tunas and the so-called factory of factories, checked everything that has been done and also what is missing to start the ambitious project.

As “Felton” operation is vital for the stability of the National Electroenergetic System, the also Hero of the Republic of Cuba insisted on complying with the schedule to prepare the structures to rebuild the Holguín thermoelectric, taking into account that only the conformation of these components will take 75 days.

The first objective of the Las Tunas entity has already been fulfilled since the estimation of raw materials and other supplies have been completed. If they receive inputs on time, the conformation works would begin before the end of 2022, in an extremely complex process because it is about manufacturing the main elements that support the physical part of Unit 2, such as columns and beams of different sizes and diameters, besides other secondary ones such as braces, which consist of a steel core and a system that restricts said core against buckling.

On July 8, while the turbine of Block 2 of the Holguin plant was running, as part of the tests before its complete start-up, a leak occurred in one of the boiler tubes, through which the crude circulated, and although it was turned off, the high temperatures trigger a fire that caused considerable damage.
