Re-enactment of Las Tunas City burning in 1876

A representation of the people of Las Tunas, together with the main political and governmental authorities of the territory, re-enacted on the night of September 26 the burning of the city carried out 147 years ago by the mambí troops under the command of Major General Vicente García González.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The artists remembered that “being Cuban is a duty,” the notes of La Bayamesa were heard in the wind; there were dances and songs. Brígida Zaldívar herself seemed to be heard when a woman's voice, full of passion, told of the agony she suffered in the mansion on the former Real Street; the indomitable woman who never betrayed her husband, and put independence before the deepest pain.

Young faces with torches in their hands chanted the words of that time, the flames that covered the house were photographed with joy, and even fireworks streaked through the night because freedom should be celebrated as much as possible.

The activity is one of the highlights of the Week of Culture that the city is celebrating these days and will culminate on the coming 30th, the date to honor San Jerónimo, the patron saint of this land.
