Ramiro Valdés assesses METUNAS tasks for recovery of Block 2 of the Felton Thermoelectric

Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, deputy prime minister of the Republic of Cuba, assured that, at this time, the main priority of the group of the Francisco (Paco) Cabrera Metal Structures Company, commercially known as METUNAS, is the conformation of the elements for the integral repair of Block 2 of the Lidio Ramón Pérez thermoelectric plant (CTE), Felton, in the neighboring Holguín province, devastated by a fire last July.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- In a meeting with the top leaders of the territory and the metallurgical entity, he insisted that it is indispensable to accomplish the work schedule to achieve the objective for the country since "Felton," together with the CTE Antonio Guiteras, supports the base of the National Power System and, therefore, nothing can fail.

Thus, shortening the deadlines becomes essential. He said that today, METUNAS is Cuba, and everything that the industry needs must be guaranteed, to manufacture what is ordered in the scheduled time because the stability of the electrical service on the Island depends on that.

The professionals from Las Tunas advance in the technical preparation and redesign of the plans of what needs to be done; an extremely complex mission involving the fabrication of all the roof beams, which support the boiler and the dome; as well as several columns, platforms, the main bracing, and other lateral components that were completely damaged by the fire.

Depending on the magnitude of the task, it could be completed in about 75 days. At the same time, a national strategy was designed to recover the affected unit in about a year. The human and material resources and the plan for each stage have been organized with the contribution of several companies that work to fulfill that goal.

The Commander of the Revolution was accompanied by Manuel Pérez Gallego, a member of the Central Committee and first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) in Las Tunas, and Jaime Chiang Vega, governor.

On July 8, while the turbine of Block 2 of the Holguín plant was in operation, as part of the tests before its complete start-up, a leak occurred in one of the boiler tubes, through which national crude circulated; although it was turned off, the high temperatures triggered a fire that caused considerable damage.
