Sancti Spíritus, Cuba.- For two days, some 50 experts from all over the country debated the issue in keynote speeches and panels, within the framework of the World Breastfeeding Week, whose motto is "Breastfeeding: the Foundation of Life," running in Cuba from August 1 to 7.
Dr. Roberto Álvarez Fumero, head of the Mother-Child Department at the Ministry of Public Health, gave the lecture entitled "One Hundred Reasons to Promote Breastfeeding, exclusive in the first six months of life and in a complementary way up to two years."
Among the benefits presented by the expert are: it prevents postpartum depression, is more economical, saves time for the mother, strengthens the affective bonds of the family and improves emotional intelligence and integrated early childhood development.
He also included among the benefits a lower risk of juvenile diabetes and obesity, as well as the syndrome of sudden death, and the preservation of the environment.
Alvarez Fumero told reporters that in 2017 and 2018, about 40 of nearly 60 hospitals that had been granted the Mother-Child Friend status in the 1990s were re-certified in the country.
This is a strategy supported in Cuba by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
Among the objectives is to strengthen the communication and promotion strategy for health that allows families to increase their responsibility in the use of breastfeeding, including the father's support. (PL)
