EU joins the Istambul Convention

The European Parliament approved the access of the European Union (EU) to the Istanbul Convention on Preventing and combatting violence against Women, signed six years ago.

Brussels.- Reluctance on the part of Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, and Slovakia delayed the subscription of the regional mechanism to the document.

However, the ratification materializes only in the sections related to institutions and public administration, as well as those related to judicial cooperation, asylum, and nonrefoulement.

The Istanbul Convention is the most far-reaching, binding international instrument to comprehensively address violence against women and domestic violence. (PL)
