Donation of food for the Pediatric Hospital

"Since this disease began to hit us harder, the idea of collaborating with what I have does not rest in my head." This is what Yordanis Montejo Vargas, president of the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes credit and services cooperative (CCS), of the Las Tunas municipality, says.

Hours go by working for this peasant; however, two of the last few days have had a different routine. In one, the first hours of the day caught him on the way to Puerto Padre, to the Guillermo Domínguez Hospital; he brought one of the first bulls slaughtered from him for COVID-19 positive patients. The other day, he went directly to the Pediatric Hospital in the capital city, where he left a large amount of food for the infants.

Yordanis also wanted to bring a bovine, “but sometimes difficulties play tricks on us and we can't do everything we want. In these bustles we are very affected by fuel, transportation ...; however, these children were not going to be left without our donation and here we are, with three pigs (which together weigh almost two and a half quintals), two quintals of rice, 500 corncobs, and two quintals of mango," he said.

For this farmer, and the associates of the "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes," the watchword today is food production. "For a long time, this has been our main function; but, now, it has become more necessary due to the intensification of the economic blockade and the difficult epidemiological situation, which requires us to give everything in agriculture."

"This pandemic moves our hearts, our lives; these are difficult times, and every day we will continue to produce for the people because it is the only way to overcome the blockade and show that we are strong and unstoppable."

Yordanis is an energetic peasant, with confident steps, and willing to do whatever it takes. Nor is it strange to see the sensitivity drawn in his eyes and his unconditional solidarity, when without thinking twice, he gives what he has to the people, for whom he works.

This gesture, distinctive of consecrated and brave peasants like him, is greatly appreciated by those who wait for an improvement in health in a hospital bed.

On behalf of the patients, and of all the personnel who work day by day for their recovery, Luzberto Toledano Montoya, administrative deputy director of the Pediatric Hospital, affirmed that “this is the most humane gesture that our farmers can have for, in such difficult times, improve children's nutrition. These actions dignify our Revolution and the producers in whom the nation and the people trust so much.”
