Meteorology station in Las Tunas

Systematic surveillance of the different meteorological variables is developed every day by the 13 observers of the two stations that exist in Las Tunas, located in the northern municipality of Puerto Padre and in this city, together with the nine specialists of the Forecast Group (GP) of the Provincial Meteorological Center. 

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The technical sub-director of the entity and one of its most visible faces, Alexey Moreno Borges, informed that this is a practice of the 365 days of each year, which reaches the maximum priority during the hurricane season for the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, from June 1st to November 30th.

There are 56 workers in the local Meteorological System; but the specialists of the GP process the statistics, to later transmit the information to the Institute of Meteorology and to the people, through the media, as well as to the municipal and provincial governments and to the Civil Defense.

The groups of Applied Meteorology, Informatics, Communications and the Station Network are elementary for this management.

During the months of greatest incidence of severe local storms, the different authorities are warned if the conditions for their occurrence are created, with a period of between three and six hours before, because they are of rapid formation and up to the moment there is no model that can predict them with certainty.

The stations of Las Tunas stand out among their similar ones in the country for their efficiency in the meteorological observation and, according to Moreno Borges, in the period between January and July of the current year, it is reported success in the forecasts superior to 93.7 percent, superior to the national average that is 87 percent.
