New Las Tunas Governor and Vice-Governor will take office before a representative of the Council of State.

Las Tunas will have two women occupying its main government positions, after Yelenis Tornet Menéndez and Juana Yamilka Viñals Suárez were elected as governor and vice-governor, respectively, on Sunday, as the National Electoral Council (CEN) announced through the National Television Newscast.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The electoral body specified that Tornet Menéndez received 98.58 percent of the votes of 637 constituency delegates, representing 98.81 percent of the total; meanwhile, Viñals Suárez was approved by 97.48 percent. According to the CEN official report, 93.37 percent voted for both candidates.

According to the Constitution of the Republic and the Electoral Law, the district delegates elect the highest government positions in each province based on the proposals presented by the President of the Republic.

Yelenis Tornet Menéndez, 52, is a well-known face in the governmental sphere and for citizens. The graduate in Accounting and Finance and holder of a Public Administration and Business Management Diploma was elected vice-governor of Las Tunas between 2020 and 2023. She will go down in history as the first woman to occupy that position in this eastern province after it was established by the Magna Carta of 2019.

Previously, Tornet Menéndez served as director of Finance and Prices in the municipality of Puerto Padre, a responsibility that she later held at the provincial level. Since 2019, she assumed various positions in governmental structures. At the time of her election, she is the director of Operations of the Chemical Industry Business Group.

Juana Yamilka Viñals Suárez, 51, a graduate in Physics and Electronics and a Master in Education Sciences, is a member of the Council of State and a deputy to the National Assembly since 2021. Viñals Suárez has presided over the Las Tunas Municipal Assembly of the People's Power since 2019.

New Las Tunas Governor and Vice-Governor will take office before a representative of the Council of State designated for this purpose on the date set by within the term of the 21 days following their election.
