Thousands of people from Las Tunas have gone to the fields of the territory, on voluntary work days, to support food production and greet May Day from the furrows, as evidence of their commitment to this priority task of the nation.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Mailín Mir Corrales, a member of the Secretariat of the Cuban Workers' Central Union in the province, highlighted the massive response of the workers to the call of the labor organization, which seeks to boost the economy in all spheres.

Mir Corrales valued the mobilizations as a demonstration of “how much we can do, and the collective willingness to contribute to the increase of food products”; and she emphasized: “This response is also a preview that we are going to this May Day more united and strengthened, and that food production will continue to occupy a significance place in the work of the labor movement.”

More than 500 mobilized people went to the Calera productive pole, representing the 15 unions, who planted two hectares of cassava and resumed the traditional practice of watering the seeds with water transported in tanker trucks, to guarantee germination in lands affected by drought and lack of irrigation equipment.

Danuris Ortiz Velázquez, a member of the CTC Provincial Secretariat, confirmed that in productive poles of the remaining seven municipalities, the participants planted sweet potatoes and beans, collected peppers and tomatoes, and provided cultural attention to other crops.

The highest leadership of the Cuban Communist Party, the Government, and the administrations of the organizations, companies, and productive units accompanied the workers, “which shows that unity bears fruit in the face of today's challenges,” she stated.

Velázquez Ortiz explained that due to the low availability of fuel, many affiliates have stayed at the headquarters of their workplaces, where they undertook cleaning, beautification, and setting tasks with allegorical themes to the anniversary of the world proletariat.

The union movement cultivates fidelity to the historical legacy of the Island; thus, exchanges with combatants of the Revolution in Girón and other epics for national and other brother peoples’ redemption are held. The Labor Heroes of the Republic of Cuba will also receive the well-deserved tribute and tour work centers to hold meetings with their labor groups.
