United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Tor Wennesland on Saturday called for maximum restraint and the protection of civilian lives due to increasing tension in the Gaza Strip.

Tor WenneslandUnited Nations.- In a statement released here after the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad launched an operation against Israel on Saturday, the UN representative said, “I am deeply concerned for the well-being of all civilians. I am in close contact with all concerned to urge maximum restraint and call on all sides to protect civilians.”

“This is a dangerous precipice and I appeal to all to pull back from the brink,” he pointed out.

According to press reports, several towns near the Gaza Strip continue to be controlled by Palestinian militiamen, while 35 Israelis were transferred to be exchanged for detainees.

MEXICO CALLS FOR AN END TO VIOLENCE IN GAZA AND PREVENT ESCALATION

Mexico.- The Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs on Saturday called for an end to unnecessary violence in the Gaza Strip to prevent an escalation that can cause more damage and suffering to the civilian population.

The press release pointed out that Mexico considers it essential to resume the process of direct and good faith negotiations between the two parties, leading to a fair, full, and definitive peace agreement, within the framework of the two-state solution, which recognizes the right of Israel and Palestine to coexist in peace, within mutually agreed upon and internationally recognized secure borders, in tune with the resolutions adopted by the United Nations.

The Secretariat of Foreign Affairs also regretted the loss of human lives in Israel. (PL)
