Emissions from local industries reach many districts in Las Tunas capital city

Las Tunas Meteorology Center carried out an exhaustive investigative work on air pollution, which contributions may be of great interest to different socioeconomic sectors of the province.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The research works correspond to José Norlan Peña Ojeda, the main specialist of the Applied Meteorology group, who explained that the study is an evaluation of the behavior of this phenomenon in the capital city, generated both by sources located in the territory as in other geographic areas.

The expert explained to Tiempo21.cu, the digital site of Radio Victoria station, that an inventory of all the sources that emit more pollutants was included, based on inquiries that began in 2016; and the air quality was modeled to determine where the gases are going, taking into account the direction and strength of the wind.

This incursion constitutes the first study on the subject carried out in Las Tunas, in which proposed methodologies by governing bodies such as the World Meteorological Organization, the World Health Organization, and Cuban policies and standards for air pollution surveillance were used.

With these inquiries, the incidence of pollution caused by Las Tunas industries and the industrialized areas of Moa and Nuevitas was verified, although effects from North America and the Caribbean region are also perceived.

The results also confirm that the most affected areas in the capital city of Las Tunas are the Aguilera, Sosa, Nuevo Sosa, and San Antonio del Cornito districts, where emissions from local industries reach the most.

Peña Ojeda specified that, when analyzing the incidence of mobile sources on Vicente García Street, the main artery of this eastern city, it was found that motorcycles are the major polluters in the vehicle category, mainly around noon when it reaches maximum peaks.

Important information is also derived From the studies carried out for the sectors of Agriculture, Health, Industries, and Transport, with which it is planned to carry out research, collaboration, or service projects.
