Cuba commemorates this Saturday the 63rd anniversary of the founding of its State Security Organs (OSE), created at the behest of historic leader Fidel Castro.
Havana, Cuba.- Three months after the revolutionary triumph, the island's government merged the Department of Investigation of the Rebel Army (DIER), the Navy Intelligence, and the G-2 of the National Revolutionary Police.
According to historical documents, on March 26, the three security services were officially united into a single body that initially kept the name of DIER, whose command was assumed by Commander Ramiro Valdés Menéndez.
According to official sources, the intelligence and counterintelligence operations aimed to discover and neutralize the covert plans of the U.S. government and its subversion and espionage services.
As a result of this work, plans for attacks against Cuba's main leaders were stopped, especially the more than 600 assassination attempts against leader Fidel Castro.
The State Security Organs also acted against actions of ideological subversion, the bombing of cities, airports, sugar mills, and in general to prevent sabotage to the economy.
Experts have also recognized their work in confronting military invasions, infiltrations by terrorist groups, the encouragement and support of terrorist organizations, and the introduction of plagues and diseases into the country.
Official data show that in these 63 years, more than a hundred combatants of the Cuban security and intelligence services lost their lives in defense of national sovereignty. (RHC)
