COVID-19 in Las Tunas

The health authorities reported three new positive patients for COVID-19 in this province, with an incidence rate of 0.19 in the last 15 days.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Dr. Aldo Cortés González, deputy director of the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology, explained to 26Digital that the first of them is a 65-year-old health collaborator, who arrived in the province from Venezuela on July 29.

He was in the isolation center for travelers, ta the Club Familiar, because on that date travelers from abroad were still isolated in their territories of residence. There, the PCR test was performed, which was positive for SARS-CoV-2. Ten contacts were studied, but they maintain the epidemiological surveillance.

A 3-year-old minor was also confirmed, who was in Havana, receiving medical attention at the Pando Ferrer hospital. On August 3, before arriving in Las Tunas, he and his parents participated in a family dinner, and later, during their return trip on August 4, the parents learned that one of those present at the meeting had tested positive for the disease.

Once at home, they immediately went to the Gustavo Aldereguía polyclinic and the three were isolated in the center set up for that purpose. In isolation, the child had a low-grade fever and was transferred to the Mártires de Las Tunas pediatric hospital. The PCR was positive and 23 contacts were isolated; several of them have already been studied.

Thanks to the collaboration of the Transport sector, the passenger list of the bus where the child and his family traveled was obtained, and the investigations continue. For this reason, although the infant belongs to the Gustavo Aldereguía health area, he has contacts in the Guillermo Tejas area and in the municipalities of “Jesús Menéndez,” Puerto Padre, Jobabo, “Amancio” and “Colombia,” all asymptomatic.

The doctor said that both confirmed patients are being assisted in the hospitals of the provincial capital; the adult, in the Ernesto Guevara; and the child, in the Pediatric, in accordance with the organization established by the Ministry of Public Health.
"This event tells us about the precautions we must take because one does not know who may be sick, even being a contact of someone who in turn was related to a confirmed person and not knowing it.

"Hence the importance of people traveling only if necessary and in doing so they must comply with the biosecurity standards, discipline, in some circumstances, physical distance and in others, social distancing depending on the magnitude of the problem in the area where they are," he says.

The third case is a 29-year-old citizen, resident in the municipality of Las Tunas, with a source of infection abroad that did not reach the territory, as she was isolated in the capital. Eight contacts are kept under surveillance. With this, there are already four positives patients to the COVID-19 in recent days, two of them without contacts in this province.
