Cuba celebrates 2023 May Day

Although Monday's weather forecast has determined to postpone the mobilizations organized in the main squares of the country's municipalities, Cuban workers are celebrating International Workers' Day with several activities.

Havana, Cuba.- The heavy rains recorded in the country’s different regions on Sunday and the possibility of heavy rains also this Monday made the Cuban Workers Federation (CTC) decide to postpone these mobilizations for May 5.

Nevertheless, in those places where weather conditions permit, the cultural and festive activities prepared for the date will take place.

May Day celebration had a different nuance this year as the country is amid an acute fuel supply crisis; the CTC decided not to hold large rallies, such as the usual ones in the Havana municipality of Plaza de la Revolución.

However, activities such as voluntary work, agricultural mobilizations, decoration and recognition awards, and meetings with representatives of the international workers’ movement visiting Cuba were maintained.

More than 1,000 foreign guests are in Cuba to participate in the program organized for International Workers’ Day. Since April 26, they have participated in theoretical meetings, talks with Cuban workers, and visits to workplaces and neighborhoods in transition.

The International Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba and Anti-imperialism 200 Years after the Monroe Doctrine is scheduled for Tuesday, May 2.

The CTC is already preparing for the May 5 parades, as, according to Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, the celebration has not been canceled but postponed, and everyone continues the call to “put hands and hearts to the homeland.”
