Among his numerous combats, the historiography records the battle of Las Guásimas, where Gómez managed to use all-important principles of military strategies.

The battle of Las Guásimas took place from March 15 to 19, 1874, in Camagüey province, where Brigadier Armiñán´s troops, with 3,000 soldiers, confronted the Cuban forces commanded by General Máximo Gómez.

His (Gómez) essential contribution in the course of both liberating deeds, his capacity, courage, and total devotion to the revolutionary cause earned him the appointment of Generalissimo of the Liberating Army. (PL)
