Spanish friendship associations with Cuba are engaged in collecting funds and materials to help rehabilitate and condition special education schools in Santiago de Cuba, as part of a solidarity cooperation project.

Madrid.- There are 27 specialized schools in Santiago de Cuba. “So far we have helped restore 15 of them and we will continue to rehabilitate them all,” as assured to Prensa Latina by Silvia Román, who is in charge of the “Classrooms for Life” initiative.

Román is the leader of the La Guevara Solidarity and Development Cooperation Association, which has been working on rehabilitating, providing resources, and conditioning special education schools in Santiago de Cuba in partnership with MediCuba Spain.

Román explained that they are currently collecting construction and educational materials to improve the infrastructure, this time at the Alfredo Noa Díaz school in Santiago de Cuba.

La Guevara began its noble initiative in 2008 in Havana and continued it in 2015 in Santiago de Cuba due to the deterioration of the schools resulting from the passage of time and the deficiencies caused by the United States economic blockade, which prevents their timely maintenance.

Among the materials collected are means to train children and young people, in special education, and different trades and thus guide them into adult life. (PL)
