On January 29, President Donald Trump signed an executive order declaring a national emergency and establishing a process to impose tariffs on goods from countries that sell or supply oil to the largest of the Antilles.
The measure —another turn of the screw in the more than 60-year-old blockade attempting to suffocate the Cuban people— is part of the Trump administration's current policy of maximum pressure against the island and attempts to justify itself with US national security and foreign policy interests.
In response to the denunciation of this brutal act of aggression against the country and its people, expressions of rejection of this policy have arrived from various parts of the world; solidarity organizations, heads os states, personalities, and groups show their support for the Caribbean nation.
Mexico Will Seek Way to Support Cuba, Affirms Sheinbaum
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that Mexico will seek a way to support Cuba, and emphasized the importance of avoiding a humanitarian crisis on the island following the controversial measures announced by Washington.
"Mexico will always be in solidarity, always seeking the best way to support the Cuban people in solidarity," she affirmed.
Referring to the US threat to impose tariffs on goods from countries that sell or supply oil to the largest of the Antilles, the dignitary mentioned the effects of that escalation on transportation and the operation of power generation plants.
"So, imagine if there were no electricity. Without electricity, hospitals don't function, refrigerators don't work, and a humanitarian situation is created, affecting people's lives," the President illustrated.
"Our interest," she stressed, "is that this does not happen to the Cuban people, and I believe it is not just the interest of our government, but of all the people of Mexico, and that is what we want to convey to the United States government: that it is very important to avoid a humanitarian crisis."
Addressing the topic a second time during her regular press conference, Sheinbaum reiterated that she instructed the Secretary of Foreign Relations, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, to engage with the North American administration "or for them to send the oil."
"Of course, we do not want to risk more tariffs on Mexico, but simply through diplomatic channels, seek a dialogue framework that prevents a serious situation for the Cuban people, who are already living through a very difficult situation," she specified.

UN Reiterates Position Against US Blockade on Cuba
The Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Farhan Aziz Haq, reiterated today the United Nations' position in favor of lifting the US blockade against Cuba.
"As you know, the General Assembly has repeatedly called for an end to the blockade against Cuba," the spokesperson stated in response to a question from Prensa Latina regarding the tightening of this policy, following the new executive order by the Donald Trump administration to unilaterally impose coercive tariffs on countries that sell oil to the Caribbean nation.
"We urge all Member States to comply with the resolutions of the General Assembly," he said.
China Strongly Rejects New US Escalation Against Cuba

China today strongly rejected "any inhumane action or practice that deprives the Cuban people of their right to survival and development," in response to the recent Executive Order by US President Donald Trump.
In reply to a question from Prensa Latina, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun reiterated Beijing's firm support for the island "in resolutely defending its national sovereignty and security." The spokesperson also underscored the Asian giant's opposition to foreign interference in the affairs of the largest of the Antilles.
Earlier this week, Guo Jiakun urged Washington "to stop depriving the Cuban people of their right to survival and development, to stop undermining regional peace and stability, to end violations of international law, and to immediately lift the blockade and sanctions against Cuba."
Furthermore, he affirmed that China will continue to provide support and assistance to the Caribbean nation and expressed confidence that "under the firm leadership of the Cuban Party and Government, the Cuban people will undoubtedly overcome their current difficulties."
Cuba is a Heritage of Humanity, Stresses Former Brazilian Workers' Party Leader
Cuba is a heritage of humanity and deserves all our support and solidarity, expressed José Genoino, former president of Brazil's Workers' Party (PT), today following a new act of aggression by President Donald Trump against the island.
In a telephone conversation with Prensa Latina, the former Brazilian federal deputy stated that supporting Cuba is a duty of every democrat, of all who defend the self-determination of peoples, and of all socialists.
"Cuba represents a victory against imperialism and the struggle of peoples, and it has marked our generations," added Genoino, after the US president yesterday signed an executive order declaring a national emergency regarding the Caribbean country and announcing tariffs against those who supply it with oil.
According to the former PT leader, solidarity with Cuba means taking to the streets, pressuring progressive and center-left governments not to accept the American blockade, and also requires an internationalist demonstration of world public opinion to provide full support to the Antillean nation.
"Cuba must win," Genoino added, asserting that this pressure from the United States—"an empire in crisis trying to suffocate this fundamental reference for democratic and socialist changes"—cannot be accepted. (CubaSí)
