Strong flares rose up to the Matanzas sky

The Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines confirmed that the situation continues very complex at the Matanzas Supertanker Base, as a result of the fire that began on Friday due to a lightning strike.

Havana, Cuba.- In its Twitter account, the agency specified that the place cannot be accessed and urged to maintain equanimity at this difficult moment for the Caribbean island, where there was no record of an incident of this magnitude.

According to the information, the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Power Plant, also in the city of Matanzas, works with 219 MW of power.

The highest authorities of the Party and the Government in the country and the province are at the scene.

A huge explosion, apparently as a consequence of the collapse of the fuel tank that continued to burn, worsened tonight the gigantic fire that has affected the Supertanker Base in this western city.

Cuban Television broadcasted images of the moment when the explosion occurred, apparently due to the destruction of the fuel tank, which could not withstand the intense heat after burning for more than 30 hours.

Previously, and to safeguard the lives of the personnel involved in extinguishing the fire, the authorities directing the confrontation with the incident had paralyzed the cooling process of the so-called third tank, adjacent to the one that exploded almost at the stroke of midnight.
