Insufficient supply of seeds in Las Tunas.

The guarantee of seeds for the current cold sowing campaign is tense in the province of Las Tunas, where only part of the seeds needed to plant the 25,467 hectares planned in the eight municipalities are available.

Las Tunas, Cuba - Reynaldo Frank Brito Pérez, subdelegate for various crops in the delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture, explained that in one way or another, the agamic seeds are guaranteed and pointed out that all the banana and sweet potato that will be planted in the irrigated areas are available.

He said that in the case of cassava, there is a specific situation and noted that this resource is scarce due to the long and intense drought that affected this region. However, he acknowledged that there are sufficient areas planted, which will allow the plans to be fulfilled and overfulfilled by the end of February.

Brito Pérez added that of the botanical seeds of national reproduction, maize, and tomato are available. He specified that not all of the beans are guaranteed, as there are only 500 hectares available for planting and the plan for the territory doubles that figure.
On this important item for the diet of the people of Tunisia, the official said that alternatives must be sought with other grains and thanked many producers of the cooperative and peasant sector, who year after year preserve their seeds.

He pointed out that the economic situation in the country has had an impact on the lack of imported seeds, and currently only a small quantity of cabbage, carrots, and beetroot is available. Finally, he recalled that a part of the onion was always guaranteed, which will not be the case this season.

According to agricultural specialists, together with the soil and the availability of water, the quality of the seeds is essential for the success of the sowing; the germination rate, the development of the plant, and the yields depend on it.
