The Book and Literature Fair will take place from September 4th to 6th with a diverse program, dedicated especially to the centennial of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, the Russian Federation as guest of honor, writers Adalberto Hechavarría Alonso (Majibacoa) and Jorge Luis Peña Reyes (Puerto Padre), and the 35th anniversary of the Sanlope publishing house.
Las Tunas, Cuba.– Although this year's event is smaller than in previous years due to the current circumstances in the country, the organizers have not abandoned their traditional activities. The main venue is located on Custodio Orive Street, next to Maceo Park.
The children's area, Tesoro de Papel (Paper Treasure), will also be featured at Maceo Park, with readings, book presentations, and other activities, hosted by actors Elizabeth Borrero, Luis Andrés Till, and Mayelín Batista.
Literary Thought, the event's quintessential theoretical forum, also returns, offering an exploration of relevant topics such as Russian literature, women writers, and Fidel Castro's influence on Cuban literature. The Caracol Room, at the Provincial Committee of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), hosts this event.
In the afternoons, the institution's courtyard comes alive with Flowers of the Soul, a much-anticipated gathering that blends poetry, music, book discussions, and other attractions.
According to Acirys Espinosa Martínez, director of the local publishing house, approximately 30 titles are featured in this year's edition, available in both print and digital formats. She also announced that while the Virtual City section will not be held due to the energy crisis, booksellers have QR codes available for several titles, allowing those interested to scan and purchase them online.
As usual, other institutions and organizations are also participating in the festivities. Lismary Fernández Pacheco, director of the Pablo Armando Fernández Literary Promotion Center, mentioned the activities taking place —for example— at the headquarters of the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS) and the Union of Historians of Cuba (UNHIC), in José Martí Plaza, at the Nicolás Guillén Foundation, the El Cucalambé Ibero-American House of the Décima (a ten-line stanza form), and other venues.
Furthermore, the young woman praised the presence at the Book Fair of promotional publications such as El Guijarro, from the El Cucalambé literary workshop; Solo de Poesía, a pamphlet promoting the Cultura y Tuneridad project; and the Caminos publishing house, from the Popular Educators Network.
