62nd National Polio Vaccination Campaign

The first stage of the Bivalent Oral Anti-Polio Campaign is underway in the province and is carried out throughout the country for the immunization of children older than one month of birth and up to 11 months and 29 days.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Yahilín Nápoles Novella, head of the Vaccination Program at the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Microbiology, stressed that the estimated population to benefit in the territory is 14,572; all conditions have been created to achieve success.

The Gustavo Aldereguía Lima polyclinic, in the provincial capital, hosted the opening and, for the development of such an important process, vaccination points were set up in the offices of the Family Doctor and Nurse, in such a way as to guarantee the conservation of the immunogen and bring the service closer to the residents.

Nápoles Novella explained that the second stage will take place from April 24 to 29, in which another dose will be administered to those who receive this first one, and will also provide a reactive dose to some 6,342 9-year-old infants.

She also explained that the anti-polio administered in drops should not be given to minors with fever, vomiting, or diarrhea and they must wait 30 minutes before and after vaccination to drink water.

In 1995, Cuba received certification for the eradication of poliomyelitis from the Pan American Health Organization, a disease that causes paralysis, disability, and death in infants and young children, hence the relevance of this prophylactic action.
