Pregnant women who live in remote communities and those who have complex family situations are admitted to maternal homes

For the highest authorities in the country and in the province, the Maternal and Infant Program (PAMI by its Spanish acronym) is a priority. The figures for the last quarter of the year are encouraging in terms of the percentage of expected births.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- This is what Viviana Gutiérrez Rodríguez, Director of Health in the province, informed the sector and government authorities at a working meeting. She also explained that despite having a high percentage of mothers in unfavorable housing conditions, 245 of whom are over the third pregnancy, mechanisms are being sought together with the local governments to provide them with cots, mattresses, and a layette.

There are all the necessary conditions for the care of pregnant women in hospitals and maternity homes, as well as for those who are with their newborns in neonatology services.

"There are internal elements that are contributing to very high morbidity. Pregnant women - approximately up to 20 weeks - need a differentiation that begins at home, both in terms of nutrition and in improving their working conditions to ensure that they maintain a good weight, and in this way transform prematurity, which is too high compared to the indicators to which Las Tunas is accustomed," reiterated Gutiérrez Rodríguez.

In this sense, the doctors know how to act and the sector's directors know how to supervise the work they are doing in their clinics and the gynecobstetrics consultations, although it remains to intensify attention to the most vulnerable groups, to pregnant women who live in remote communities and those who have complex family situations.

"Pregnant women who have nutritional problems and whose economic situation does not allow them to improve their diet should be transferred to a maternity home, where they have the food they need to avoid any nutritional risk".

Adolescent pregnancy in Las Tunas has had alarming figures for years. Today there are 486 underage pregnant women, which implies a high risk for the mother and future baby, the head of the sector reiterated here.
