Pregnant and postpartum women are educated about breastfeeding immunological and psychological benefits

Creating sustainable support systems is the mandate of World Breastfeeding Week, which concludes this August 7th. A day promoted by the World Health Organization for the benefit of children, given what it represents for their growth and development.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- In Puerto Padre, as in the rest of the country, these days, there are actions aimed at raising awareness about this sublime act of love. It is so named because the arrival of a baby should mean happiness, and in that joy, everything we do should always be for the well-being of our babies.

There is no doubt that breast milk is the best food for them; however, some argue that there isn't enough of it, that babies aren't full, and so, additions are added to a process that should be natural.

Statistics from the General Health Directorate in Puerto Padre provide data that illustrate shortcomings. While more than 90 percent of infants under 6 months of age in the municipality are exclusively breastfed, others are fed mixed foods, in addition to those who do not have this beneficial option, which constitutes a child's first vaccination.

IN JOBABO, PROMOTING LIFE

Also, in Jobabo, various activities were held to spread more information about the importance of this vital act, which supports the growth and development of infants.

Talks, discussions, video screenings, the creation of support groups for breastfeeding mothers in the communities, and the evaluation of medical offices to declare them Mother and Child Friendly are just some of the initiatives, according to local health officials.

In this framework, pregnant and postpartum women are educated about the immunological and psychological benefits, as well as the guarantee of better health for their babies if they choose to exclusively breastfeed them until 6 months of age.

CREATE SUSTAINABLE SUPPORT SYSTEMS

During pregnancy, the mother receives tools for this beautiful process; likewise, in the first hours of postpartum and later, during visits with her doctor and family nurse.

It is vital not to violate it. The family plays an important role in breastfeeding, not only because they ensure the mother's nutrition, but also because they provide peace of mind and ensure adherence.

Nothing should come before breastfeeding. It is a natural gift to be fully enjoyed; it should not encounter obstacles in the first 6 months, and should even extend to 2 years.

There is so much generosity and revelation of feelings during this time that only those who experience it can describe it. Let's build sustainable support systems so that all babies can have this true wonder.
