Intending to achieve adequate monitoring of patients who arrive with multiple injuries due to accidents, especially traffic accidents, the Ernesto Guevara de la Serna General Teaching Hospital has proposed, in the immediate future, to create an observation room that provides a more timely and efficient service, focused on preserving the quality of life of the injured.
Las Tunas, Cuba.- Dr. Marianela Zapata, director of the largest hospital in the province, assured 26 that the project, which will be launched this year, aims to improve the management of these cases, in a context where there has been an increase in the number of traffic accidents with serious repercussions for human life.
“During the first half of 2025, we have exceeded the number of multiple trauma cases we treated last year,” warned the doctor. "Today, as we enter the summer season, when epidemiologically, due to the very nature of vacations and people's mobility, these misfortunes increase, the institution cannot remain immovable.
"Trauma cases are becoming increasingly complex, with younger patients, especially about motorcycle accidents, which have led us to seek strategies that continue to allow for higher quality and promptness of care to reduce mortality.
“The observation room for monitoring accident victims will be organized with the structural requirements to ensure the intervention of several surgical specialties at the same time and to guarantee better, personalized monitoring by healthcare personnel.”
“We will have a surgeon on permanent duty in the room, together with the nursing staff. We will move the diagnostic equipment there to avoid moving the injured throughout the institution; this, of course, allows us to increase the survival rate of these patients.”
In a social landscape marked by a shortage of medical supplies, the institution of Las Tunas, through commitment and sensitivity, guarantees the resources, diagnostic equipment, and highly qualified personnel to deal with the consequences of accidents on public roads, often caused by citizens' irresponsibility.
With a focus on prevention, health authorities urge self-care, the protection of minors, compliance with traffic laws, and above all, that drivers avoid drinking alcohol.
