Health institutions are ready to protect children, pregnan women and elder adults.

With the priority of protecting pregnant women and children, the Maternal and Child Care Program (PAMI) in the province has activated its mechanisms to ensure medical services in the face of the threatening impact of Hurricane Melissa on Cuba's eastern region.

Dr. Osmara López Borrero, head of PAMI in Las Tunas, assured that, given the two concurrent events: the epidemiological situation and the hurricane, details are being finalized, and the province's main institutions are being visited with a view to ensuring the necessary procedures for the coming days.

Dr. Osmara López Borrero.“All the province's maternity homes are ready and will also function as evacuation centers,” the doctor stated. “Polyclinics and PAMI's municipal branches have reviewed the conditions of pregnant women and children in flood zones to ensure their safety, as well as infants with chronic conditions and those in a vulnerable situation.”

“We have all the necessary logistical insurance, medical, and nursing staff. We have established work teams to cover medical shifts so that the necessary personnel are available to arrange additional care if necessary.”

López Borrero emphasized that all units, including provincial and municipal hospitals and maternity homes, have implemented a safety plan, prepared their structures, and protected the facilities with all possible alternatives.

She also emphasized that the Neonatology Department is prepared and the medical staff will be on duty physically, to ensure that life continues along paths of safety and protection.
