Some 21,000 Las Tunas people donate blood.

The voluntary blood donors of Las Tunas maintained their leading role among those in other parts of the country who promote this solidarity movement; and, once again, placed the province in the group of outstanding at the national level.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- At least 21 thousand inhabitants of the territory take part in such endeavor; however, there are many more, because those who donate their blood are also involved after responding to the call made by unions or student organizations, Maura Rodríguez Ramírez, provincial coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), said.

They have made it possible for at least 1,500 voluntary donations every month, which are decisive for the local Health System and the national Pharmaceutical Industry, she said.

“Unlike previous stages, she added, we have managed to get all municipalities to honor their commitments; with a special highlight for Puerto Padre, which was the avant-garde, closely followed by 'Jesús Menéndez', Las Tunas and 'Amancio'.”

Rodríguez Ramírez stressed that the rebound of the Balcón de Oriente in the humanitarian movement has occurred as a result of the strengthening of ties with the Public Health authorities; "In particular, with the Provincial Blood Bank." Besides the contribution of institutions and organizations that encourage the participation of their members.

In this sense, she praised what was done by the members of the Ministry of the Interior and the Revolutionary Armed Forces; also from the Cuban Workers’ Federation (CTC), as well as the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) and the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER). Not forgetting the enthusiastic support of the Young Communist League (UJC) and the University Student Federation (FEU).

Achieving it in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic means another reason for commendation because it added much stricter guidelines for epidemiological control. "The value of the joint work of our leaders at the grassroots with the Primary Health Care specialists and even the role of those who take part in the transport of a product that literally saves lives has been demonstrated," she concluded.

During this week, there will be moments of tribute to donors in their places of residence or workplace, always respecting the established physical distancing measures.
