World Food Day 2022

The municipalities of Jobabo, Colombia, and Amancio are among the most favored in the province of Las Tunas for the support given by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to the impulse of increasingly sustainable territories.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Regarding World Food Day, held on October 16, Marcelo Resende, representative of that entity, said that -until 2027- FAO supports the project "Increasing climate resilience of households and rural communities through the rehabilitation of productive landscapes in selected localities of the Republic of Cuba (IRES)."

“More than 38 million dollars were allocated and that initiative will have an impact on the productive rehabilitation of about 35 thousand hectares in three provinces, which currently have degraded or invaded soils by marabou.

“In Las Tunas territory, about 16 thousand hectares are rehabilitated, through forest, agroforestry and silvopasture systems, which drive adaptation to climate change and mitigating its effects, besides an increase in food production.

“The agroforestry modules will include intercalated cedars with forest species. And with the others, the planting of fruit trees with various crops, leguminous plants, and shade trees will be enhanced, which will allow the development of livestock. We highlight the work of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) and the Ministry of Agriculture, key factors for the promotion of food and nutritional sovereignty in the country.”

He explained that World Food Day 2022 comes in the context of many challenges for Cuba and the world, and is an opportunity for reflection and action in the face of the growing problems of food security.

“We live in a difficult post-COVID-19 stage, plus the effects of climate change, and the consequences of the war conflict between Russia and Ukraine. It's not just Cuba. The world is going through a difficult time because many million people suffer from hunger.

“But, in that scenario, the response of Cuba has been the approval of the Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutrition Safety Law, with deep transformations of local food systems and greater articulation of science, technology, and innovation.

"In our opinion, this law will be the way to strengthen the right to healthy and adequate food, recognized in Articles 77 and 78 of the Constitution of the Republic, and evidences the political will of the State to promote and enforce this right."

Regarding the consequences of the passage of Hurricane Ian through the western region of Cuba, the official highlighted FAO’s commitment and solidarity with the affected people, so we made a tour and, immediately, it was decided to send help.

“We are focused on the mobilization of resources and financing to revive local food production in the affected areas and, therefore, we already contribute approximately one million dollars to support the recovery work.

“Seed acquisition and farming houses for the production of short cycle lines are expected; as well as, the purchase of water tanks, food, and ceilings for animal breeding sheds, besides the repair of warehouses of the agricultural and fishing sectors.”
