Some 100 hectares of the damaged crops have been planted again

More than 525 hectares damaged by the intense rains that affected the province of Las Tunas have been recovered in the areas with the highest rainfall; some 401 tons of food have been harvested.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The meteorological event affected 1,468 crop hectares and 1,563 tons of products were damaged, of which 95.6 have been planted so far, as a result of the committed effort of the part of the workers of that sector.

In livestock, 1,836 heads of cattle moved to safer places, however, 61 were lost; many of them as a result of human errors, a sign of the lack of preparation to face that kind of weather phenomenon.

During a recovery analysis meeting with the highest authorities of the province, it was reported that urban agriculture also suffered considerable damage in 29 semi-protected organoponics and 614 beds, of which 384 have already been recovered. In this program, deficiencies were also pointed out before the rains, because more than six thousand beds were empty, something truly inexplicable, which mortgages the consumption of vegetables by the population.

The member of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) and first secretary in the province, Manuel René Pérez Gallego, assured that amid the damage, rains left positive results for the reservoirs in the territory, with 82 percent filling of their total capacity, and indicated a detailed analysis of each of the affectations; above all, the causes that depend on human action and hold those responsible accountable.

He pointed out that it is necessary to take the experiences of what happened, and the first thing is to better prepare for this type of meteorological event, define the plans to face it, the adoption of preventive measures, and the evaluation of the damages without waiting for guidelines.
