Workers from Las Tunas participate in Territorial Defense Day

On Territorial Defense Day, the workers and the people summoned in the eight municipalities of Las Tunas joined the environmental sanitation in the communities and workplaces; a vital task to preserve health after the intense and persistent rains in the first weeks of this month.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Odalis Batista Pérez, secretary-general of the Provincial Committee of the Central Union of Cuban Workers, praised the active participation of workers in these actions that contribute to caring for the environment and mitigates vulnerabilities, in a season prone to the proliferation of vectors.

The affiliates of the workers' organization cleaned up interior and exterior areas of their workplaces and developed autofocus actions to detect and destroy potential breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, with its multiplied presence and the real danger of transmitting diseases such as dengue and Zika. They also promoted food production and beautification also in communities.

Popular councils two, 18 and 19, the most impacted by the rainfall in Las Tunas city, were the headquarters of the central activities of this eastern territory, which had aftershocks in similar areas of all the sites damaged by the meteorological phenomenon.

This battle for recovery was led by companies and organizations with this social mandate, whose work had the support of the neighbors to jointly carried out cleaning and clearing of ditches, canals, sewers, riverbeds, and streams that minimize flood risks.

An essential objective of the exercise was to perfect the work in the organization and the insurance of the damages caused by the heavy rains that impacted the provincial geography on the first days of this month and to verify the objectivity in the elaboration of the plans to perfect the governing documents that govern dealing with meteorological events.

It also included the verification of the communication and information systems at the different levels of each territory, for the coordination of actions in confronting natural disasters, and the mitigation of dangers to save lives and material resources.

On this occasion, all the structures that make up the territorial defensive device were mobilized, which directed the work of collecting solid waste, eradicating micro-dumps, and maintaining the construction supports of dams, micro-dams, and reservoirs to correct weaknesses.
