La Morena Weather Station, Puerto Padre, Las Tunas

The La Morena Meteorological Station, located in the homonym community, Puerto Padre, added new services after the installation of a seismological instrument because of the increase in land tremors in the area.

Seismological device installed in Puerto PadrePuerto Padre, Las Tunas.- According to statements from the D. in Science Enrique Diego Arango Arias, the Technical Vice-Director and Head of the National Seismological Service, “an anomalous seismic activity has been featured in the north of the province of Las Tunas, specifically, 60 kilometers north of the city of Puerto Padre. We continue to register earthquakes in the area, although they are not perceptible in the national territory, rather close to the Bahamas, its proximity can influence our country; therefore, it is of interest to the General Staff of the Cuban Civil Defense and the Ministry of Sciences, Technology, and Environment (CITMA).”

The device, along with twenty more distributed throughout the archipelago, complies intending to archive the cataclysms initiated at the end of the previous calendar.

“From November 8, 2022, when one of the magnitude 5 on the Richter scale was perceived, 1,499 seismic movements have been detected. According to studies, there is no background in such coordinates, nor a tectonic failure, not even of less category. Given these circumstances, several researchers on the Island deepen on the genesis of the events, with the involvement of various sectors.”

Arango Arias reported that the scientific tool has a temporary character so far to increase the studies of this natural phenomenon. He also said about the characteristics of the broadband state-of-the-art technology, which registers both local earthquakes and those in the Caribbean region."
