CDR's leader Pedro Cárdenas Espinosa

Yusely, his co-worker, says he is good people. In his post as custodian of the Plaza de la Revolución Mayor General Vicente García González, he looks at the stars or the cones of shadows that, like waves of giant elephants, make the palms and trees that surround it under the reflections of the moon or the lights of the cars that travel along 2 de Diciembre Avenue, where it has been located since July 26, 1997.

The historic Loma de Peralejo is a good place to remember, although the traffic in the area awakens the silence and this man interrupts his meditations. He feels proud to take care of the site those shelters so many patriotic deeds and, for instants, he imagines the Mambo artillery that at the end of August 1897 was placed in the wide esplanade and highlighted José Julián Martí, the son of the Apostle, as a shooter. The military actions were under the command of Major General Calixto García, who besieged, attacked, and took the city.

The view is lost where now 125 thousand people can concentrate ... Live again the May Day parades, the events for July 26, and even the iconic presentation of the orchestra Los Van Van, on November 20, 2010, in which the train of Cuban music broke the record of dancers and the cultural event was the most important of the year in the province. More than 60 thousand Las Tunas' inhabitants participated in such an important event. It seemed like an infinite dance.

Pedro Cárdenas Espinosa enjoys his work. Maybe that's why the nights go early and he doesn't see if a smile gives him away, while he thinks about the best moments of his childhood. In his heart, he keeps that blackboard with which he used to give classes to his friends in the neighborhood, even when he was a little boy. There is also the honesty of his family, the humility of his parents, and his upright, educated upbringing, which led him to be a Pioneer leader and to hold positions in the Student Federation of Secondary Education.

He now devotes most of his time to the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR). At the age of 14, he decided to follow his father's passion for organizing and never left the path.

"About 15 years ago I assumed the presidency of CDR 2 Rolando Pérez Quintosa, of Zone 268, District 123, in the Santos distribution, belonging to the Popular Council 18. We are 62 members and we have deserved the National Vanguard Status for work maintained over the years. Our neighbors are very enthusiastic and participative in the community.

"For all of us, it is a recognition that fills us with pride and unites us much more. These results are endorsed by the  CDR guards, the cleaning tasks, the attendance to meetings, the blood donations, and the participation in every activity that summons us from any instance. Solidarity attention to people in social situations and a Pioneer Committee, with seven children, is also part of our strengths, as well as the contributions made to the pediatric hospital Mártires de Las Tunas and the victims of the cyclone in Pinar del Río," says Pedrito, as he is affectionately identified everywhere.

He remains thoughtful and, suddenly, smiles. These last weeks were also hectic for his Committee and the factors of the area. The "Rolando Pérez Quintosa" was chosen to receive the delegates to the X Provincial Assembly Congress of the CDR, held last Friday, July 14 at the University of Las Tunas, with the presence of Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, National Coordinator of the organization.

"We were all involved in the preparations and organization of this important activity," he said. Since Thursday afternoon, the block changed. It was very nice to share with Gerardo, the Five Heroes, as the people call them. He was given a very revolutionary reception and a quality cultural presentation and the caldosa was not lacking. The cederistas and the guests had a great time, including the children who had a clown show and arrived at midnight dancing.

This daily unity is what highlights Pedrito's work as president. He does not accept that things go wrong and from his position as ideological secretary of the Zone, he provides unconditional support and advice to the rest of the grassroots organizations.

In his merit sheet he jealously keeps the proposal of his collective in 2004 to be a pre-candidate for the deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power, and in 2019 for member of the Central Committee, to which he adds many recognitions as a Security and Protection agent for more than 20 years, when he began his working life at the Hermanos Ameijeiras airport in this city.

The militant, union leader, marked by punctuality and "no rest until the assigned task is completed," Pedrito describes himself as a natural advisor and a worker who calls things by their name. He acknowledges the support of community leaders and confesses that he will always give the CDR, the block, and the neighbors the best of himself.

Those who see him walking the neighborhood, affectionate and instructive, think that yes, so many years as president, obtaining the National Vanguard Status, and fulfilling with frenzy several responsibilities is because of that, because of the teacher he carries inside. The X Congress of September has already set a new goal in his agenda: to ratify the condition that fills his people with enthusiasm and commitment. There is no need to bet. It is a given.
