Less accidents but more victims in Las Tunas in 2023

The 373 traffic accidents that occurred in the eastern province of Las Tunas in 2023 left a trail of mourning in families, with 25 people dead and 237 injured, figures that show the seriousness of these events caused - in a high percentage - by indiscipline in the tracks.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Even though they decreased by almost a hundred compared to the previous period, the statistics reflect that in the territory, there is one accident per day, one death for every 15 events of this nature, and 33 accidents each month, on average.

Failure to control the vehicle and respect the right of way, and improper overtaking, all directly related to the behavior of drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians were among the main causes.

The largest number of accidents occurred due to the collision of moving vehicles, their overturning, and the collision of cyclists.

Those caused by technical malfunctions were in the minority, showing that almost all accidents were completely avoidable if not for road indiscipline, the main cause of these events throughout the year.

The number of drivers without a license is significant, mainly on mopeds, one of the most common violations on the province's roads.

The municipalities with the highest number of accidents in 2023 were Las Tunas, Puerto Padre, and Majibacoa, where the highest number of deaths and injuries occurred.

In the fight against these incidents during 2023, around 42 thousand technical inspections were carried out, more than 29 thousand fines were imposed, 178 operating work licenses were withdrawn, and more than 700 vehicles were immobilized.

The highest Transportation authorities insisted that for the current year, road safety continues to be a priority and strategies will be implemented to prevent any event that causes loss and suffering to Las Tunas families.
