Provincial Meteorology Center in Las Tunas

Meteorological Sciences play an important role in the economic development of the province of Las Tunas, especially in key sectors such as agriculture, the sugar harvest, construction, tourism and the generation of energy from renewable sources, activity in which the territory stands out in the country.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- This region is the one with the least rainfall in Cuba, with just 1,038 millimeters of historical average, and it does not stand out for having large reservoirs -except for the Juan Sáez dam, with a capacity for 112 million cubic meters-, therefore the information on the behavior of the climate is decisive to undertake different socioeconomic actions.

Provincial Meteorology Center in Las TunasThe Provincial Meteorology Center offers multiple services to companies that request them and its experts are the only empowered to certify matters related to climate variability, such as the probability of rain, drought, humidity and the occurrence of severe local storms, among other phenomena.

Alexey Moreno Borges, technical deputy director of the entity, stressed that the group fulfills its social function of informing the population of the weather forecast in the media, with emphasis on the network of Radio stations existing in six of the eight municipalities of the territory.

He added that they also offer other services with authorized, reliable and timely information, such as agro meteorological bulletins for food producers, marine forecasts, early warning of thunderstorms, and warnings of possible diseases in crops and studies of air quality determined by emissions of polluting agents.

To fulfill these missions, the center has modern technology, two stations in the municipalities of Las Tunas and Puerto Padre and qualified personnel, recognized because their forecasts from January to July exceed 93.7 percent of effectiveness, above the country's average, which is 87 percent.
