Yandry Otaño Guerra, first secretary of the Municipal PCC Committee in "Colombia."

More than 450 productive and social activities have been carried out this time in the municipality of Colombia, venue of the Las Tunas Provincial Ceremony commemorating the assault on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks, on its 72nd anniversary.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- All of them will result in benefits for the patriotic and combative people, as described by Yandry Otaño Guerra, first secretary of the Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC in Spanish), when referring to the protagonists of the transformations taking place here.

On the occasion of July 26, we set ourselves specific goals that would multiply the excitement we ‘Colombians’ felt when we learned that the Provincial Bureau of the PCC had agreed to grant this territory the headquarters for the central activities for the Day of National Rebellion. We had already earned the same recognition for the 66th anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution, just six months earlier.

“This inspired us to create a work program focused on the four priorities established by the PCC Central Committee, aiming to achieve significant results in key production, economic, social, and political issues, which are now recognized by the people.”

He points out that the district is growing in terms of militancy and grassroots organizations, maintaining stability in the implementation of cadre policy and enjoying a good socio-political climate, despite the current circumstances facing the country.

"Everything is important to us, but food production is our priority, which is why we are working to promote and develop new areas for various crops. In this way, we intend to increase production volumes, especially considering that there are only 132 hectares under irrigation in the territory, three percent of the arable land.

"For this reason, agricultural yields on most plantations are low, but this has not stopped us. We have accumulated excellent experience in planting cassava by hydrating the seed, in addition to using organic fertilizers, biostimulants, and biopesticides.

“The current spring planting campaign is performing at 123 percent, and the remaining indicators are also being met. For example, all production units are delivering the beef contracted with the industry, and milk is being collected above plan, although six production bases with 28 cattle owners are not meeting their targets.”

The party leader says that, from a production standpoint, the main actions are the construction of semi-protected greenhouses with photovoltaic panel pumping systems on the Los Manantiales and La Jía farms, which belong to the agro-industrial company Colombia.

He mentions the recovery of the livestock intervention scenario at Kilometer 18, the maintenance of the canning factory areas, the planting of 100 hectares of various crops in the development areas of the Las Mercedes production hub, and the repair of the La Ceiba agricultural market, among other missions.

On the social front, Otaño Guerra explains that the municipality has maintained infant mortality at zero per thousand live births for 23 consecutive months and maternal mortality at the same rate for more than 15 years. In addition, the teenage pregnancy rate is falling, and excellent results are being recorded in the education sector.

"In one way or another, the plan of activities for the anniversary results in benefits for the ‘Colombians’. Highlights include the construction of the Anacaona children's home to benefit 19 families, the promotion of the construction of the SUMA laboratory at the hospital, and the completion of six homes.

“Work is also being done on the Colombia-Guáimaro and Colombia-Amancio highway sections, the Natural and Traditional Medicine production center, the pumping station in the Alba Flores community, and food stores, clinics, and playgrounds.”

Since 2003, this southern municipality has not had a provincial headquarters for the 26th of July events.
