The dams accumulate just over 159 million cubic meters of water

From the first day of May, when the wet period began, and until the middle of the current June, 214.6 millimeters of rain precipitated in Las Tunas, which represents 70 percent of the historical average for the date, which is 302.7 millimeters.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Liset Montero Infante, a specialist in Hydrology at the Provincial Delegation of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH), reported that the southern area was the most favored in these 45 days, although there are no significant changes in the amount of water collected in the 23 reservoirs managed by the entity.

According to the part of the operational center, so far the dams are at 45 percent of their total filling capacity and, at the end of April, the percentage was 44, so the rainfall has not been effective for the accumulation of the liquid.

The province accumulates just over 159 million cubic meters of water and could reach 350 million 915 thousand, a dream for the authorities, specialists, and the people in general because this is one of the driest territories in the country.

The current situation puts Las Tunas in good condition in the face of the hurricane season, which lasts until November 30, since only the Derivadora Sevilla reservoir, in the southern municipality of Amancio, is full.

Other territories with more than 50 percent capacity in their dams are Majibacoa, Las Tunas, and Manatí - with 51, 58, and 67 percent, respectively-, while the lowest reserves are registered in Jobabo, which does not exceed nine percent.

As another data of interest, it stands out that there is enough water to supply this city with 281 days of coverage from “El Rincón” and 417 from “Cayojo.” It is also reported that “Juan Sáez,” the largest of the Las Tunas reservoirs, is at 29 percent of its total capacity.

Given the possible occurrence of numerous precipitations in the rainy season, INRH specialists maintain systematic surveillance of the reservoirs and carry out various actions to guarantee the liquid to the population despite the current circumstances.
